Hailey Trails Open

May 4, 2006

With the arrival of long awaited sunny spring weather, trails conditions are changing quickly in the Wood River Valley. Big Wood River Backcountry Trails, has reported that all area dirt trails are temporarily closed. This general closure refers to most of the north valley trails. Mid-valley and further south some of the dirt roads and hill trails are open and seeing lots of enthusiastic users.

In Hailey some open trails are:

  • Carbonate Mountain – Open to the top
  • Democrat Gulch and Lambs Gulch – Open in increasing amount, mud and snow will be found in varying degree further up the canyon. Drying quickly.
  • Quigley Canyon – The main road is open to the junction at 5.8 miles with another mile or so open to the west. The road to the south and its connections with Slaughterhouse and Cove Creek are closed.
  • Quigley Canyon Foothills – The trails and canyon to the left & north, directly at the start of Quigleys dirt road, are all dry and open.
  • Colorado Gulch is closed due to snow in its upper reaches and north side and access is blocked by flooding at the entrance near the Wood River.

All of these areas are very popular right now, especially Carbonate Mtn. and Quigley Canyon Road. Please expect other trail users and extend all courtesy.

    Recent Updates:

Quigley and it’s junctions are open all the way to their summits. There are stretches of mud, recent gullies, and fallen trees. These obstacles are all negotiable by foot and bike but may present some challenges.
At the summit leading to Cove Creek, is a notorious stretch of mud and waterholes, we do not recommend venturing past there quite yet and Cove Creek is still closed from the East Fork side.
The branch to Indian Creek is also impassable past its high point . The recent status of Slaughterhouse is unknown but suspected to be muddy and wet as well.

Colorado Gulch is all open. There is only access from Croy Creek though as the entrance from Broadford road is flooded by th Big Wood River.
